What is Minibus Insurance?

Minibus Insurance is a specialised type of vehicle insurance designed to cover vehicles that can carry between 9 and 16 passengers, in addition to the driver.1 According to UK law, drivers must be 21 years old or over to drive a minibus.Whether you drive or own a minibus for commercial purposes, community services, or personal travel, minibuses require specialised insurance coverage to ensure you meet legal requirements, have effective protection, and peace of mind.

Why is Minibus Insurance so essential?

Minibuses are widely used by schools, charities, sports clubs, churches, and businesses. Because they carry multiple passengers, the risk of accidents and passenger liability claims can be higher than for standard vehicles. It is a legal requirement to have at least third-party insurance for any vehicle used on public roads.

Did you know Minibus Insurance depends on the usage of your vehicle?

Minibuses are used for a range of different reasons, whether this is for charity and community organisations, schools and care homes, or leisure or paying passengers such as taxis (known as Hire & Reward). Talk to us about your Minibus Insurance and we will ensure you get the right advice and the very best price.

Hire and Reward Insurance

If you’re using the Minibus or Taxi and /or passenger transport services to make a profit, then you will need your cover to extend to Hire & Reward.

Section 19 & 22 Permits

If you are transporting passengers without the intention of making profit, you can apply for permits under sections 19 or 22 of the Transport Act 1985. These types of permits are for transportation organisations that operate on a not-for-profit basis. These permits allow you to provide transport for passengers for hire or reward without having to hold a full public service vehicle operator (PSV ‘O’) licence.

Section 19 permits can be used for vehicles that carry no more than 16 passengers and or larger vehicles that carry 17 or more passengers. They cannot be used for vehicles that carry members of the public.

Section 22 permits do allow you to carry the general public but are only applicable for vehicles that provide a community service.3

Personal use

For private owners using the minibus for family or recreational purposes. If you’re looking to insure your minibus for ‘personal use’ talk to us at BCD about finding appropriate cover.

Business Use

If you are using your minibus as part of your business activities, including transporting your staff to places of work, then you will need your policy to extend to include business use.

The Community Transport Association (CTA)

If you are a member of the CTA, BCD are your official insurance partner. We have access to special discounts for CTA members with MiDAS certificates; and each time you insure with us, we donate to the CTA!

We also provide additional types of cover for your Minibus

Public Liability Insurance

Public Liability Insurance is an additional policy that provides financial protection around compensation claims and legal fees that occur outside the vehicle, for example, if a member of the public is injured during passenger loading or unloading.

Employers Liability Insurance

Employers Liability Insurance is a legal requirement in the UK if you employ people to work for you. If one of your employees is injured whilst working for you, Employers Liability Insurance can cover you if your employee makes a claim against you or your business.

Breakdown Cover

Often included or available as an add-on, this provides roadside assistance, which is particularly important for vehicles carrying multiple passengers.
